Jan. 21st, 2003 10:18 pmSo I took this cool picture of a tropical fish for the paper this Friday. I was just killing time at the pet store I'm writing about, while the woman I was there to photograph was helping customers. I really liked how it turned out, so I designated it as the background picture for my computer at work.
Allen, the classifieds manager who moonlights as a photographer of flowers, saw it. When I told him I had taken it, he asked me: "Are you selling your photographs yet?" I said no. He said, "You're almost there."
That made my day.
I think I'm going to invest in a good camera within a year or so. I might be able to make a go at this whole photography thing. Shoot, Paul Wellman at the Independent said he only got started with it as a hobby three years ago -- and now he's the photo editor. No formal training. That's encouraging -- that you can be successful at something so intimidating, in such a short time, by teaching yourself. I operate well that way, I think. The only thing that scares me is the amount of money required to buy a good camera and the supplementary equipment. The rest, I figure I can learn as I go.
And by the way: I've decided to pursue music more than I have been. I wrote a whole one verse to a song yesterday. Go, me.
